How can I apply for a student and residence visa in Slovenia? As a public rule, international students who want to apply for a visa in Slovenia have to submit and fill out the application form personally in Slovenian diplomatic missions or consulate in their country of residence.

Student visa application procedures in Slovenia
Candidates have to submit and fill out the visa application form alongside with the required documents personally in the nearest Slovenia embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
Usually, students that are EU/EEA/Swiss citizens do not need to apply for a visa to enter Slovenia. They only need to register themselves at the local authorities within 90 days upon their arrival in the country.
On the other hand, non-EU/EEA/Swiss students absolutely need a student visa along with a residence permit. They need to get them before traveling to Slovenia, then apply for the residence permit once they set foot in the country.
Any student who need a visa for Slovenia has the choice between a short-stay visa / tourist visa (Visa C) and a long-stay visa (Visa D).

The following documents must be submitted along with the application form as well:
- Letter of acceptance issued by the higher education institution of Slovenia.

Validity Period
A Slovenian long-stay visa is valid for a period of 90 days in a duration of 6 months.
Residence Permit for the purpose of study in Slovenia
The duration of student residence permit: 1 month or more.
International students who apply for a residence permit in Slovenia have two options, depending on the duration of their study:
Temporary residence permit: for students who have a provable purpose of residence in Slovenia. In this case, they can get a permit that will be valid for one year, that they can extend under the same conditions as the first residence permit.
Permanent residence permit: is for students who have resided in Slovenia after a fixed, continuous and lawful period. The difference from the temporary permit is that it has no limitation of duration. However, when applying, students need to show a valid purpose for their permanent residence in Slovenia.

Requirements and documentation for the student residence permit in Slovenia
For the very first residence permit application, students need to provide:
- a valid passport which expiry date exceeds the intended permit of stay in Slovenia by at least 3 months
- health insurance to cover the student’s emergency health care
- confirmation of their admission acceptance in a higher education institution in Slovenia
- proof of sufficient means of subsistence, of at least equal to the basic minimal income in the Republic of Slovenia
- a clear criminal record proof, which is usually a verified police certificate not older than 3 months, translated in Slovenian and notarized
- photograph, two fingerprints for their digital capture

Slovenia study visa processing time
You must submit a visa application at least 15 days and no more than three months prior to the intended visit.
Appeal against visa rejection
Applicants whose visa is rejected can appeal (Article 29 of the Foreigner Act) besides, it must be written in Slovene language and contain all elements of appeal as set out in the Administrative procedure act.
Note that the consulate fees of the appeal are 153 EUR and during the pendency of the appeal, a new visa application cannot be considered.
