Requirements of a Student Visa in Mexico
To get your student visa, you will need to submit the following:
- Valid Passport (6 months after your scheduled residence)
- Completed visa application form
- 6 photographs showing your face-front profile and 5 photographs showing your lift side face profile 2 cm * 2 cm with white background.
- Proof of admission in a Mexican university, all candidates must submit an acceptance letter from the institution they want to study in, the level, degree, duration of the planned studies, and field of study.
- Proof of means of financial support to fund studies and stay in Mexico (300 Dollars per residence month)
- In case the applicant has received any scholarship, he must submit appropriate documents.
- Foreign students must submit proof of medical insurance.
- Submit a medical statement indicating that the student is in good condition and free of any diseases.
- A booked flight ticket.
Please keep in mind that the documents you submit must be in English or in Spanish. You have to translate them in case they are not and submit both the original and translated version. Also, before you submit any official document (birth certificate, school transcripts etc), they need to be legalized.
How to apply for a Mexico Student Visa
The application process for a study visa in Mexico involves two steps:
- Applying for a visitor student visa at a Mexican embassy
- Exchange this student visa into a student temporary resident card upon arrival in Mexico.
The first step consists of the same procedures you will go through to get a visa:
- Contact the Mexican embassy of your country to set an appointment.
- Complete the visa application form and collect the required documents listed above
- Submit the application, pay the visa fees and undergo an interview on the date of your appointment
- Wait for the visa to be processed, get back your passport with the affixed visa if the application is successful
The next move is to travel to Mexico and turn the visa into a student temporary resident visa, in case you plan to stay for more than 6 months. To get this residence permit, you need to provide:
- The completed Resident Card request form
- Your passport with the student visa attached
- The proof of payment of the resident card fee
- A request letter to the INM
- The proof of your enrollment into a Mexican university

Normally, visa fees are around $36. This cost may change depending on the country from which you apply for the visa. The same goes for the payment method: via bank transfer, in cash or any other accepted system.
In case the applicant is a minor, he must include authorization letter notarized by parents, and birth certificate clarifying the parents’ names.
Moreover, you will need to pay a fee for your Temporary Resident Card along with a processing fee at the Mexican national immigration institute (INM). It ranges between $150 to $350 (3,000 to 7,000 Mexican Pesos), depending on the number of years it is issued for.

For how long is a student visa valid in Mexico?
A visitor student visa in Mexico is valid for a maximum of six months. During a period of 30 days upon your arrival, you have to apply for a resident permit through the National Immigration Institute.
Besides, this temporary resident visa allows you to stay in Mexico for one year. It also allows you to enter and leave the country multiple times. Also, it can be renewed for a maximum of three years after the first year. Therefore, students who apply for six months long programs must obtain a visitor visa instead of a long stay student visa.
